This was a speculative project.

Problem

Instagram stories are an exciting way to promote yourself and your brand. Stickers are the cherry on the top for the stories. Adding stickers to stories makes it more attractive but it can be difficult to arrange multiple stickers. Many times users by mistake click on the elements which makes it come forward. This issue makes it difficult to arrange the stickers.

Solution

Tapping on the sticker reveals more editing options like changing the layer, locking the sticker, and adding animation. When we drag the sticker, the sticker won’t come to the front instead will move in the same layer.

People find it difficult to arrange emoji

SURVEY

A survey was conducted with 57 people. I found participants on Facebook aged 16 - 35. 72.4 % of the participants find it difficult to arrange the emojis. 80% of the participants struggle to add emojis to the story. 72.2 % of the participants find it hard to change/ add music to the story. The majority of the user use it for fun and to express their thoughts and things they like.

INTERVIEW

2 students were interviewed. They find it difficult to use many stickers. While adding music to the story, they mostly search for the song they already know. They go for songs that go with the theme of the story.

Snapchat, WhatsApp, and Facebook are apps that have story features. Stories on Facebook are the same as on Instagram. In Snapchat and WhatsApp the sticker stayed in the same layer which makes it easy to arrange but the user cannot change the layer afterwards. Both of them also have undo option which is a very convenient feature. I also researched other editing apps which people use to create stories such as PicsArt, Photoshop, Canva, VSCO, Lightroom, Mobile Presets, Unfold, etc. All of them had many font styles, color options, and picture editing features.

Ideation

According to the survey, 61.1 % were discontent with the font options available on Instagram. There are currently 9 font styles available. I initially worked on having more font style but users want to make stories quickly. Some of the users also use other editing apps like canva to make the visuals for the Instagram stories. These editing apps have many font styles available. There is no reason to compete with them. Users want to create stories quickly and having lots of options will confuse them.

Many users struggle with arranging the sticker. The main issue is when a user clicks on an emoji, it comes forward. If there are multiple stickers. They can mistakenly click on the sticker even when they don’t wish to.

Tapping on the sticker shows more options to edit the sticker. Arrow buttons allows users to change the layers. The lock button is used to lock the sticker. The sticker won't move at all when it is locked. The design language of the Instagram is maintained.

Tapping on the animation buttons allows one to add animations to the sticker. Tapping on the lock buttons Locks the sticker. 
Tapping on the upward arrow button moves the sticker to the front layer. Tapping on the downward arrow moves the sticker to the layer below.

MUSIC
To help look for music more easily, a back button is introduced when a song is being played in case the user doesn't like the current song and wants to select another song.
